There is a text reader but I'm not sure if there is a pdf reader. Search the forums to find the txt reader program.

There are already several decent PDF readers that will work on a custom Windows CE 4.2 device like yours.
If free is your game, get the CE .net Viewers from cmonex's page here: http://izemize.fw.hu/hpc.php A direct link is here: http://www.freeweb.hu/izemize/cenet_viewersfull.zip These are the Microsoft File Viewers for Windows CE .net that come with the Windows CE 4.2 Platform Builder. (This is the tool Tiger Telematics themselves used to make the OS on the Gizmondo.) They are not really made by Microsoft. They are actually made by Westtek and are virtually identical to the commercial versions for Pocket PC found here on Westtek's site: http://westtek.com/pocketpc/ Microsoft licensed them for distribution with their OEM Windows CE products to allow for native document viewing support in custom WinCE platforms. This package not only includes the PDF viewer but also the Word, Powerpoint, Excel and Image Viewer as well. Another nice PDF viewer that is currently in beta is Foxit Reader. The beta seems free, but I think this may become a commercial product eventually... so get it while you can. This should work fine on a custom WinCE 4.2 device like the Gizmondo. http://www.foxitsoftware.com/foxitreader/rd_ppc.php Download the Pocket PC 2003 version The third viewer is free and open source. PocketXpdf is a port of the popular Xpdf PDF reader for Unix to Pocket PC. It also works on custom Windows CE 4.2 devices without modification. Get it here: http://pocketxpdf.sourceforge.net/ 0.3.1 may work best, but try them all. Adobe's Acrobat Reader for Pocket PC version 1.0 or 2.0 is likely the best available PDF reader for Windows CE devices since it is Adobe's official port of Acrobat to WinCE devices. This reader can read virtually any PDF file and pretty much never has the problems the third party viewers may have with certain PDF documets. Despite being very good, it has a few cons as well. For one, it is quite big. The entire installed program is about 7-8 mb, though you can delete some fonts to save space. Most of the other PDF readers listed are only about 1mb. Acrobat Reader is also a bit hard to get running on some CE 4.2 devices that do not have a very complete coredll.dll in ROM. The .exe will need to be hexedited to run on some of the more limited implementations of Windows CE 4.2. Though, I hope that is a non issue on the Gizmondo. There is a version that is already hexedited for Windows CE 4.2 on cmonex's page here: http://izemize.fw.hu/hpc.php Direct link: http://infinite.atw.hu/acro20_nec.zip It also includes the Pocket PC versions of the MFC runtimes and everything else you will need to get it running. Hopefully this is enough for the Gizmondo. Just copy it to your card and find out. The official distribution site for Adobe Acrobat Reader for Pocket PC is here: http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readerforppc.html I hope I listed enough PDF readers here to keep you guys busy for awhile. |

well, very nice summary, TFGBD.
i will just mention a few other things. it is easy to fix the poor implementation of coredll.dll. just download the coredlls from my site (yup you guessed right, http://izemize.fw.hu/hpc.php) and the executabilitycheck file as well. copy executabilitycheck.exe into RAM on your device (into ram!! this is important). preferably in root \. then run execheck and select the desired exe or dll you want to run on your gizmo. go to "rewrite dll name" button, press it and rewrite the "coredll.dll" in the popup window to "coredl2.dll". then just place one of the coredlls from my site on your gizmo (into the program's folder), renamed to coredl2.dll. i recommend the one that is 541696 bytes. this will help with acrobat reader as well, a much easier hack than to directly hexedit the acrobat exe for an obscure export. of course do this only if the program doesn't want to run and if execheck does report a problem with the original coredll.dll (you will sure see if it complains or not) one last warning!! don't use right clicking & "save target as" on the direct links from my site. use left click and let the ads load |

Tried it...it loads, but will not load a PDF....sadly it crashes after the file open dialog. It actually says something about being an evaluation version, so this may be the reason. Is there an older build anywhere?

Is there an older build anywhere? You say "after" the file open dialog... does that mean that it shows the file open dialog, and then crashes after selecting a file? If not, it's probably the usual thing (borked ofd on Gizmondo). Not an insurmountable problem of course, if anyone has some free time. |

When you hit file/open file, you are first greeted with a licensing screen, and then the error above.
